Remember that one time?

So when I was training I mentioned I found something at work but couldn't say what it was. Now that I lack some of my n00b zeal I'm thinking it's not really all that big of a deal to talk about....
It was a gun.
In a bag.
Loaded.
With one in the chamber.
Freaky stuff, no? Here's the thing though...that was the first of 5 that I have seen/heard of in a carry on bag. And that's not even counting the checkpoint at the other end of the airport. That's about one person a month who "forgot" where they stashed their LOADED handgun. That's just at our airport, which is most assuredly not a big airport. Kind of blows your mind eh?
Today we asked a guy if he had anything in his bag and he said "Um, my sunglasses"? Yep, no clue that he had his GUN in his BAG. Kuh-ray-zee
Also, it was "Bring your knife to the airport Day" this weekend. Nobody gave me the memo...
Stun guns, knives, ammunition, pepper spray, razor blades...seriously, we see it all. Terrorists are scary and whatnot, but I'm here to protect the plane from the 80% of the general public who are complete morons.

I don't even want to know what SFO deals with.

My sister accidentally once took a box cutter on the plane shortly after 9/11. She didn't realize it until she was on the flight. Security didn't catch it,though. She's one of your 80%, I guess.

What do you do with a loaded gun? Take it away permanently? Make them check it?

I have my own opinion about box cutters and pocket knives that doesn't quite mesh with TSA policy, so I'm not going to really get into that. Forgetting your HUGE ASS buck knife is one thing, but a pocket knife or other convenience item is understandable to me. Heck, I can't remember where the last place I put my pocket knife was.
TSA wasn't official until 2002, so right after 9/11 you had a TON of private contractors suddenly under much higher expectations than they were previously and it was a mess.
We call law enforcement and they take the person and the gun to run warrants and such. Many times they are allowed to fly later with their gun as checked baggage, but sometimes the gun is confiscated. They do walk away with hefty hefty fines though, one from local law enforcement and one from the federal government. Very big OUCH

I'm sitting here with my mouth kinda hanging open. I mean not just a gun, but a LOADED gun. And not just loaded, but with a round in the chamber? Trying to get ON A PLANE?

"Moron" doesn't seem enough to describe it.
